Congratulations on the Day of the State Flag of Russia!

Every year on August 22, Russia celebrates the Day of the State Flag of the Russian Federation, established on the basis of the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 1714 from the 20 august 1994.

The white-blue-red flag was first raised in 1669 during the reign of Alexey Mikhailovich on the first Russian military ship — the Oryol. In 1693, the tricolor became the personal standard of Tsar Peter I. He himself drew the sample and determined the order of the horizontal stripes. On January 31, 1705, the Tsar issued a decree according to which the white-blue-red flag should be raised «on all merchant ships».

The tricolor acquired official status in 1896. On the eve of the coronation of Nikolay II, the Ministry of Justice determined that the national color should «definitively be considered white-blue-red, and no other.»

Today, the flag of Russia — the tricolor — is an official state symbol, along with the coat of arms and anthem of the Russian Federation.
