The Rostov region will become a test region in which new satellite technologies will be tested in 2022 to ensure high-precision positioning of agricultural machinery. This decision was made during a trip to the region by the General Director of the company «Space Communications» Alexey Volin.
The company «Space Communications» plans to conduct an experiment to install the Russian satellite equipment being created on agricultural machinery to improve its positioning accuracy from 30 to 4 cm. According to forecasts, this should increase the efficiency of tractors and combines by 10–15%. Among the test participants are the company Bizon and the Don State Technical University.
Work is expected to be carried out to adapt the developed high-precision positioning devices to domestic and imported agricultural machinery. It is extremely important, noted in the Federal State Unitary Enterprise «Space Communication», that the equipment can work outside the coverage of mobile communications and the Internet, since in our country up to 90% of cultivated agricultural land is outside the coverage of mobile operators. Equipping machines with high-precision positioning equipment based on the Russian GLONASS navigation system can be a serious step towards the development of digital technologies in agriculture.
— We consider the agro-industrial complex as one of the serious potential consumers of space communications services, — said Alexey Volin, General Director of FSUE «Space Communications». — In conditions when our country has its own navigation system, we must find competitive domestic solutions for its further adjustment for the needs of agriculture. And together with our partners from the Rostov region, representing science, production and education, by the end of this summer we plan to find the main technological solutions and identify promising ways of development in this area. Conducting an experiment can also give impetus to new training and educational programs as well.
